Once you get a few cornerstone songs under your belt you’ll start to join the TS Easter Egg Hunt. She notoriously and intentionally leaves clues and codes in her lyrics and music videos that won’t mean anything if you don’t know the lore, but are either earth shattering or the info doesn’t become clear until more information comes out. For example, she was blocked from buying her catalog when her label (Big Machine Records/Scott Borchetta) sold them to someone who had cyber bullied her (Scooter Braun), so Kelly Clarkson suggest Taylor should re-record her whole catalog so that she could own it (hence there are multiple versions in the Spotify/Apple Music catalogs- the ones she owns all have (Taylor’s Version) after them) and she essentially rendered the originals worthless. She has not been releasing the re-records in chronological order and is instead dropping them in a surprise order to keep people engaged and guessing. There’s a ton of songs and lore around the whole re-record incident, which is a whole other rabbit hole to go down (My Tears Ricochet and Vigilante Shit are two examples of songs about her catalog being sold out from under her). In the Bejeweled video from her Midnights album, she hinted at the Speak Now re-release being next by pushing a purple button number 3 in the elevator (her third album was Speak Now and all of her albums are associated with colors, SN is purple). The Look What You Made Me Do video (song is off the Reputation album) is generally considered her current reigning champion for the most Easter eggs and Taylor has even said there are still some that no one has figured out yet. Similarly, in the Fortnight video there are tons of hints and her hints aren’t always super deep and crazy, like the black dog that walks through is a reference to another song in the TTPD album called Black Dog. There’s also a ton of Easter eggs on the TTPD album about old relationships and potentially hints to what the vault tracks on the ‘reputation (Taylor’s Version)’ will be about. If there’s a clock in her videos, it’s a hint to something. If her nails are painted, that’s a hint to something depending on the color. She loves the number 13 so it’s hidden in videos a lot. In the Midnights album video for Karma, she has 1989 in Roman Numerals and 1989 was the next album to be released as the re-recorded Taylor’s Version. Taylor genuinely loves playing games with us and giving sneaky info to people who care enough to try to figure it out. It just makes it more fun but also turns every Swiftie into a conspiracy theorist 😂❤️ I would say, go with Reputation (the album made after Kim/Kanye phone trap that nearly destroyed her career). Reputation was a big turning point for her career in a good way, and made her go all in. Miss Americana is a documentary about her life up to the release of the Lover album (she’s shown in the doc writing the songs for that album) and it sheds light on a lot of her struggles. TTPD (which fortnight is off of) is another album where she just stabs everyone with her pen. No one is safe, men she’s loved, the media, her fans who get too invasive or judgmental, herself. But I think TTPD is a better listen once Reputation through Midnights have been listened to. Enjoy the rabbit hole!

Netflix has a documentary called Miss Americana. Disney+ also had a documentary about her folklore/ evermore songwriting. Both are great.

Not only was she the youngest to win album of the year at that time but she has now won it 4 times, more than any other artist in history. She is a fantastic song writer and performer. Reputation album was her dis to the press for all the terrible false things they say about her. She didn’t do any interview or promos for this album and it was the second best selling album of the year. You should check out her Bad Blood video if you like Kendrick Lamar.

Reputation was such a fun album. Her better writing happened in Folklore and Evermore, and TTPD, but the most fun album is definitely Reputation.

The swap to pop listeners line is probably referring to Eminem basically taking rap fully mainstream. Hip hop was always a “black thing” but some of the greats pushed it out to the wider audience. I knew kids in the corn fields that were bangin Tupac, Biggie, Dre and Snoop. Guy’s getting shot and locked up around the time that Eminem came through like tornado and picked up the whole industry and dumped it in the mainstream. At least half the white people I know that like hip hop got into it from listening to Eminem. He’s like the gateway drug.
